Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty (commonly known as a tummy tuck) removes excess skin and fat around the stomach, while also tightening the abdominal wall. This surgery is often performed after pregnancy or weight loss, when the skin has become stretched or saggy. A new belly button may need to be surgically created by an umbilicoplasty.

What is a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer. A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. Sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals. Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include:

  • Aging
  • Heredity
  • Pregnancy
  • Prior surgery
  • Significant fluctuations in weight
What a tummy tuck won't do

A tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program. Although the results of a tummy tuck are technically permanent, the positive outcome can be greatly diminished by significant fluctuations in your weight. For this reason, individuals who are planning substantial weight loss or women who may be considering future pregnancies would be advised to postpone a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck cannot correct stretch marks, although these may be removed or somewhat improved if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be excised. Tummy tuck surgery cost may include:

  • Anesthesia fees
  • Hospital or surgical facility costs
  • Medical tests
  • Post-surgery garments
  • Prescriptions for medication
  • Surgeon’s fee
Extended Abdominoplasty

An extended abdominoplasty is a complete abdominoplasty plus a lateral thigh lift. The resulting scar runs from the posterior axillary line (when placing your open hands on your hips, the thumbs lie along the posterior axillary line.) The operation does all of the abdominal contouring of a complete abdominoplasty and allows further improvement of the flank (waist), as well as smoothing the contour of the upper lateral thigh.

How long does tummy tuck surgery take?

Depending on the technique used and whether this is combined with any other surgery, such as liposuction, it usually takes between 2-4 hours. Depending on the extent of surgery, you are asked to stay in the hospital for 1-2 nights.

What happens in the recovery period?

Your abdomen naturally gets swelledup for the first few days, but medication controls the pain. You may place a couple of pillows behind your knees in order to keep them bent to reduce the tension in your abdominal muscles. You may not be able to stand up straight away although you should start walking about as soon as possible. The stitches are removed in 10-14 days. A comfortable support garment should be worn for six weeks and you are going to have follow-up visits in the months after surgery to check on your progress.

What is the abdominoplasty surgery recovery time?

The recovery depends on each individual patient. Some return to work after only two weeks while others take three or four weeks to recuperate.
